We have learned about the Arctic and Antarctic Regions

Posted by: | Posted on: January 26, 2014

Over the last 2 weeks we have learned about the Arctic (North Pole) and Antarctic (South Pole) regions. We learned that the Antarctic is a continent underneath the ice and snow there is land. The Arctic on the other hand is not a continent underneath the ice and snow there is no land just water. Both regions experience 6 months of darkness and 6 months of light each year. People only live in the Arctic as it is too cold to live in the Antarctic.

We learned about lots of animals which live in the Artic such as the Arctic fox, Arctic hare, Polar bear, Puffins, Walrus, Bowhead and Beluga whales. In the Antarctic : Emperor penguins, Albatross, Adelie penguins, Krill. The Blue Whale  is common to both regions. We learned lots of facts about the Blue whale. It is the largest creature in the world having a length of 30 metres. It has baleen plates ( like bristles) instead of teeth so it doesn’t eat humans!! Look at our writing below and read more on the Blue whale.

During our Art lesson we made Igloos which are used by the Inuit’s who live in the Arctic regions. We loved working with clay!
